Serra Mesa is a booming community in the heart of San Diego. It’s bounded to the north by Aero Drive and Montgomery Field Airport, to the west by State Route 163, to the east by Interstate 15 and to the south by Friars Road and Mission Valley.
Serra Mesa includes the neighborhoods of Mission Village, Birdland, Abbots Hill, as well as The Village at Serra Mesa in Lincoln Military Housing’s Naval Complex San Diego. Adjacent neighborhoods include Kearny Mesa and Tierrasanta.

For the families with school-age children, the Serra Mesa schools include Harry M. Wegeforth Elementary School, John Paul Jones Elementary School, and William Howard Taft Middle School. A well-known landmark in Serra Mesa is the Ruffin Canyon National Open Space Preserve with more than 84 acres of native habit. It extends from the south end of Ruffin Road to Mission Valley; its plants provide an example of the Coastal Sage Scrub plant community. Ruffin Canyon offers primitive trails with access on the east and west sides of Taft Middle School on Gramercy Drive. This Serra Mesa Canyon Preserve is being restored by a local group called the “Friends of Ruffin Canyon” who meet a few times during each month.
Montgomery Field is a busy general aviation airport located in Serra Mesa. General aviation encompasses all aviation except air carrier and military. The types of general aviation aircraft that operate at Montgomery Field include: private, corporate, charter, air ambulance, law enforcement, fire rescue, flight training, and cargo. The FAA has also classified Montgomery Field as a reliever airport for the San Diego International Airport where airline passengers benefit by experiencing fewer delays due to an otherwise congested airport.
