When we decided to move to San Carlos from AZ, we wanted to live in an area where we were 20 minutes from all the great attractions in San Diego and was safe for my family. Whether San Carlos is considered an inland community or simply a community of San Diego, it appears to be in the middle of everything. And as they say, “location” is everything when buying a home.
If you are living in San Carlos and want to drive to The Gaslamp District or visit any one of the beautiful San Diego beaches, it will only take you 15-20 minutes to do so! In fact, traveling to La Jolla, Chula Vista, Mission Valley, Alpine or any of the San Diego attractions such as the world-famous San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, SeaWorld or even PETCO Park, is still only a 15-20 minute drive time.
San Carlos is an older, well-established neighborhood (home prices range from $300,000 to $700,000) where residents take pride in their homes. It has a feeling of safety and peacefulness where you’ll find people walking in their neighborhoods most hours of the day. We ejnoy walking around the neighborhood every weekend as a family, it’s safe, fun and our neighbors are extremely nice.
One of our favorite places to hike is Cowles Mountain. We found out it’s the number one hiking attraction in all of San Diego County. On any given day, hundreds of hikers take the uphill 1.5 mile climb to the top of this 1,591 feet peak. On a clear day, you can actually see the Pacific Ocean and south into Mexico. It’s so popular that not only will you find spring and summer hikers, but you will also find those die-hard enthusiasts who love to hike year round – even in the winter, in the rain and at night!
In close proximity to our home is the Grossmont Center Shopping Center, located on Fletcher Parkway in nearby La Mesa. This great mall has Target at one end, Wal-Mart at the other with Macy’s Department Store in the middle. Grossmont Center also has the Reading Cinemas with 10 stadium seating auditoriums. At this center, there are many specialty shops and restaurants, including Claim Jumper, B.J.’s Restaurant & Brewhouse, Casa de Pico (our favorite restaurant) and Panera Bread.
If you’re not a shopper, but fishing or boating peaks your interest, you’ll be pleased to know that Lake Murray Park, with its beautiful lake, is open year round. With the ability to either walk, run or ride bikes around the paved path which circles the lake, this makes for a perfect outing for my family and friends. We fish there once a month and our kids love it!
