College Area San Diego
The College Area in San Diego, CA is home to the San Diego State University area and is located in the central part of the City of San Diego, along the southern rim of Mission Valley and approximately eight miles northeast of the downtown area. The College Area is a residential community offering all types of homes for families and students. 92115 and 92116 are the local zip codes for the College Area.
San Diego State University started out in 1897 as the San Diego Normal School, a training facility for elementary school teachers. The nearby community became known as Normal Heights. By 1935 the school was renamed San Diego State College and relocated here. In the early 70's we saw the college become a university, but the name "College" continued as the name of the community.
The College Area (92115) is a neighborhood in San Diego that is devoted to higher education. Colleges in this area - City College, Mesa College and Miramar College and the area's namesake, San Diego State University.
A new shopping center has replaced old buildings to give the area several restaurants and new stores (Farmers Market), along with a new supermarket on El Cajon Boulevard.
